Bra genomgång av Google Scholar

En myck bra, ganska negativ, recention av Google Scholar.
Jag tycker själv att tjänsten är bra men inte så bra som hypen. Och jag ser ett stort problem i åtagande. Redan nu finns det en mycket stark tendens bland forskare (de jag känner till iaf), journalister och studenter att använda Google som sin endaste sökmotor.
Ett uselt sätt att få tecking, givet webbosfärens komplexitet och sökmotorernas trubbighet.
Med Scholars intåg finns det en uppenbar risk att, i första hand studenter men också forskare, den kommer att var det enda sättet som används för att leta akademiska material.
De allra flesta har tillgång till databaser som EBSCO genom sina institutioner eller bibliotek (kolla tex en lista över databaser tillgängliga genom Stockholms universitetsbibliotek) men är dåliga på att använda dem.
(Det bereor ofte på att de inte får relevanta introduktioner till hur omfattande och användbara de är.)

Så, om Scholar slår igenom på samma sätt som Google kommer kvalitèn på forskning/forskare att sjunka.

Google Scholar has enormous gaps in its coverage of publishers' archives, and implicitly in the direct links to the full-text documents therein. The citedness scores of documents displayed in the results lists have great potential for choosing the most promising articles and books on a subject, but they often are inflated.

With the exception of the authors' name field, Google treated the items in the huge archives as any of the zillions of unstructured pages on the Web. Google Scholar needs much refinement in collecting, filtering, processing and presenting this valuable data.

Furthermore, the Google Scholar's FAQ page does not address the most substantial content issues. The questions included seem unlikely to be the really frequent type. They sound more like the scripted questions in infomercials that let the inventor impress the carefully selected audience with the invention's capability to meet all the needs that the average customer will never have.

Så, använd Scholar men var medveten om bristerna och använd den aldrig som din enda (eller ens primära om möjligt) söktjänst för akademiska materiel.
