I have been on blogger for a while and like it. There are however a few things it lacks; trackbacks and catagories mainly.
So I am going to try another sercice to see if it is any better.

After Midnight

Old year dead, new year born.
A year of good and bad as most years are even if this one ended in the most horrible way.

• The Tsunami showed a number of things that makes me proud to be a human.
• The pictures of a mother running into a watery wall of death, defying one of human natures most powerfull drives - self-preservation - to try and save her children, is a true testement to our ability to let love overpower baser emotions.
• The work of the volunteers who put their own traumas aside to help others whose needs are greater.
• The communities in India and Sri Lanka where taking care of parentless children is seen as a given.
• The speed with which individuals (and companies) gave donations to help.

Other things make me ashamed to be human.

• The fact that the Swedish Department of Foregin Affairs demands that victims flown back from Thiland must sign a contract to repay the cost of the flight home.
• That the same department wanted to take 10% interest om monies loaned out to victims (recindeed only after newspaper publicity).
• That thives are using the lists of dead and missing to plan break-ins.
• The cynicism of some companies who say "buy our product and we will give a little to aid-funds"

May your new year be free from strife, and may you be able to cope with the strife you (as do we all) get.

Reuters AlertNet är en bra hub för nyheter om tsunamin men också om alla de andra tragidier som sker i världen året om. Mycket av informationen kommer från humanitära organisationerna själva, vilket tillsammans men Reuters egna nyheter ger en bra och relativt balanserad bild av händelserna.

BBC ha en bra rapportering on katastrofen i Asien. Uppdaterat av reportrarn i bloggstil.
Och alla behandlas på samma sätt, både touristerna, de bofasta och fattiga.

Google presenterar 2004 i söktermer

Google presenterar årets zeitgeist-lista - trender och termer vi sökte efter under det gångna året.
Listan över de mest sökt termer toppas av Brittany Spears, 2:a är Paris Hilton, 3:a Christina Aguilera.
Irak finns inte bland de top-tio.

De finns en lista över Dansk, Finsk, och Norsk sökningar men ingen Svensk.

Både Yahoo, Lycos, AOL och Ask Jeeves (årssammanställning)har liknande listor.

Mer historiskt journalistiskt materiel

Jag har tidagre skrivit om The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, som finns i ett digital arkiv (1841 till december 31, 1902.)

På British Library Online Newspaper Archive finns en liknande arkiv. Den innehåller materiel från åren 1851 till 1918 och från följande tidningar:

• The Daily News
• News of the World (jå samma tidning finns kvar idag)
• Penny Illustrated
• Weekly Dispach
• Manchester Guardian (dagens Guardian)

Mycket matnyttigt för forskare men också både intresant och rolig läsning för vem som helst.

Här finns också en intresant tidninsdigitaliseringsprojekt:

• This newspaper digitisation project will offer users in Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE):digitised British newspapers from 1800 to 1900.
• Free access to a broad range of valuable learning materials, many of them unique, and hitherto available only in London-based reading rooms, in hard copy or in microform.
• The ability to search across the different newspaper titles to draw together materials relating to a wide range of research and learning topics.

The British Library har också en väldigt bra historisk överblick över de britiska tidningarnas utveckling från 1620 till dags datum.

Betygsätta din lärare

Det finns en sajt som heter RateMyProfessors.com. Iden är enkel - betygsätta läraren på en skala ett till fem och ger ett kort omdömme. Som lärare skrämmer den skiten ur mig, men som student skulle jag tycka att det var hur läcker som helst.

Alternativ (eller kompletering) till Googles bibliotekssataning

Ett nytt initiativ för att göra litteraturen tillgängligt över internet har kommit till.
The Open-Access Text Archives är ett sammarbete mellan the Internet Archive och ett antal internationella bibliotek.

By working with libraries from 5 countries, and working to expand this number, we are bringing a broad range of materials to every interested individual. This growing commitment to open access through public archives marks a significant commitment to broad, public, and free access. While still early in its evolution, works in dozens of languages are already stored in the Internet Archive's Open-Access Text Archive offering a breadth of materials to everyone.

Over one million books have been committed to the Text Archive. Currently over twenty-seven thousand are available and an additional fifty thousand are expected in the first quarter of 2005. Advanced processing of these multilingual books will offer unprecedented access.

Plagiat (hur och varför händer det?)

En av de störste plagiatskandaler de senaste tiderna var Jayson Blair vid New York Times. Blair, en ung svart (ja, det har betydelse) reporter fick snabt stjärnstatus, men det visade sig att han hade dels plagierat andras material, dels fabricerat saker rakt av. NYT:s egen undersökning visar att över 50% av hans artiklar innehöll falskt eller plagierat material.

För att få en bra överblick över hur Blair tänkte och hur andra omkring tänket, finns det ett par böcker som bör läsas av alla journalistutbildare.
Burning Down My Masters' House: My Life at the New York Times av Jayson Blair själv ger hans syn på saken. Han hävdar bl.a att han vara ett offer för rasism.

Hard News : The Scandals at The New York Times and Their Meaning for American Media av Seth Mnookin.
Mnookin har pratat med de flesta av NYT:s reportrar och ger en välskriven in- och överblick över hela afären.

Hitta plagiat

Plagierande har ökat i.o.m Internet. Copyscape är en bra tjänst som hjälper dig att hitta dina ord/bild på andras sajter.
Skriv in URL:n till din ursprungssajt och den letar efter kopierna.
Den funkar rätt väll, men eftersom den använder sig av Google är den begränsat till det som Google redan har samlat in. Den visar de första femton träffar (även om du naturligtvis hoppas på noll!).

Flaw Found in Google Desktop Search:

A glitch discovered in Google's desktop search program could permit an attacker to secretly search the contents of a computer. The vulnerability is called a 'composition flaw' -- a security weakness that emerges when separate components interact.
